Musical Perfection

What do you think is the most perfect song ever written?

Out of all of the music ever written in the entire world, and of my limited knowledge of it? That's impossible.

Well, of what you know of it. Try to answer.

Ok... I don't know that its the -most- perfect song, and that it somehow surpasses everything else. But, I think that NIN's "Hurt" is musical and lyrical perfection. I wish I could explain it more than that, but the fact that I think its so perfect stems from how close it hits home to me, and how much I understand it. Have you ever seen Fight Club?

Nah, i never got to see it, sorry. Nor the book.

I never see movies, but I rented this one. Go get it. Read the book too, while you're at it. They are print & visual versions of that song. It's absolutely eerie. Were I more articulate, I'd tell you exactly why it makes sense... but I think its just somewhere you have to go first.

Right. I'm with ya so far. So's that what all the "exit sign" talk was about?

In a sense. Its all about having tea with your own Lucifer. Getting to know those little places you'd rather pretend don't exist.

I guess the hard part is, when you're holding that candle to the darkened corner, be careful that you don't light on fire something that you didn't see.

Or, you light it on fire anyway, see what happens. Learn to find a way out of the flames. Learn to dance with them, not against them. Sometimes you have to destroy everything just to destroy the shitty parts.

What if destroying everything destroys you?

It might, you never know. Its a risk you take. What are you going to do, live your life in ignorant bliss? I'll take my chances. Maybe there is a way out. Maybe there isn't.

You never know if you're bigger than it until you face it.

Exactly. But while you're there, you have to tell yourself that you are, and you have to believe it. You've gotta face it to get out of it.

And there might be nothing left on the other side.

I think there is. I think that if you make it, you're a better person. Life does break some beyond repair though.

Well what then?

I don't know. Like I said, I'll take my chances.
