The CARing Project

A Program for Children At Risk
A service project of the Lutheran Campus Ministry

Mission
The CARing Project seeks to build self esteem and provide role models to elementary-school children from the Langley Park area. Just a few miles away from campus, this neighborhood has high unemployment, poverty, crime, and language barriers. Our hope is to nurture the seeds of vision and possibility in each child so they dream of all that they might accomplish.

What is the CARing Project?
The CARing Project encompasses many aspects. The largest portion of the project is an afterschool program for children at risk of falling behind in school due to language and learning difficulties. This portion of the program, CARing Kids, is held on Friday afternoons at Hope Lutheran Church. Each child in the program is paired one on one with a student from the university. While at the program the children and their "buddy" engage in various activites to enhance their language, reading, writing, and arithmetic abilities.

Other aspects of the program include providing Langley Park McCormick Elementary with wish list items, such as coats, non-perishable food items, technology, school supplies, books, and other items as needed.

How is the CARing Project Supported?
The CARing project is supported largely by donations. The Lutheran Student Association receives funding from the Student Government Association at the University of Maryland. This funding is put towards the cost of the vans used to transport the CARing kids to and from the after school program. All other supplies and funding are provided through generous donations.
