Aside from its change in taste, moon cakes have taken on a new meaning from its traditional significance as the world is becoming more industrialized and health conscious. Unsanitary practices and picky consumers have driven some out of business. For others, competition has asked companies of more inventive ways in the production and presentation of moon cakes for consumption by the general public. Prices of moon cakes have risen, and the consumption of moon cakes during this traditional festival has become costly. Moon cakes have become a form of bribery for some, resulting in the coining of the phrase “moon cake corruption.” Moon cakes are “becom[ing] heavier and more valuable each year,” losing the true meaning of reunion and unity that once was and becoming more and more monetary based.
