On the Mid-Autumn festival, a celebration like a “combination of Thanksgiving and Halloween,” people fill the streets with color, light, noise, and laughter. Besides all the fancy costumes, colorful lanterns, and fun-filled contests and parades, this day is a time of gathering. Parents and children devote their time to one another, enjoying each others’ presence. One of the defining aspects of this festival though, is the mooncake. The thump and clashing sound of bakers preparing these cakes, and the delectable aroma of the “stuffed cookie” could be heard and smelled by those passing by. Children wait anxiously for mooncakes. As families sit back to observe the moon or whatever tradition they may take part in, they cut this “hockey puck” sized cake to share and savor over a cup of tea and simply enjoy the time together.
