After the Mid-Autumn festival, many families are packed with moon cakes taking them “months to consume.” As a solution to their dilemma, the Chinese had developed a clever and fun way to put all those moon cakes to use. They came up with a game called “Bo Bing,” with the stakes as—you guessed it—moon cakes! This game has reestablished family reunion, an important aspect of Chinese culture. Initially started as a way to relieve soldiers of their home sickness this game has become a popular activity addition to this festival. Some manufacturers have even taken the initiative to print the game rules and include dice in their boxes of moon cakes for consumers to engage in this long lived tradition. As today’s standard of living is rising though, moon cakes are no longer the only item up for prizes, but people could actually win cash prizes and appliances. This lively game has evolved and helped to keep the spirit of the Mid-Autumn celebration alive.
