Traditionally exchanged as gifts during the Mid-Autumn festival for thousands of years, moon cakes have evolved and facilitated the creation of new customs towards this inveterate tradition. Stores and franchises, such as Starbucks and TCBY, have taken the initiative to create and introduce to people of all cultures a new taste while still keeping the traditional forms and meaning of the Chinese’s moon cake. They have added coffee flavors and ice cream to give this cake a little “twist,” which has proved to be a big hit with the modern crowd. New versions of moon cakes are created annually to meet the health demands of today’s more health conscious people. The once fatty and high cholesterol yolks have been replaced with new and healthier substitutes and ingredients. The moon cake has been modified and improved to make sure nobody is excluded from its consumption.
