Traditionally sweet, and high in calories, moon cakes are now taking their share in the health conscious world. Moon cakes, once considered good when they “were golden brown…with oil dripping out,” are now unacceptable to consumers. These fatty, heart clogging moon cakes have been replaced with a countless assortment of new concoctions varying from the original lotus seed to shark fin and ham. Producers are staying away from the traditionally high calorie ingredients and have reduced their sugar content and changed ingredients, “cutting the fat by a third”. Some believe that “the traditional confections could be on their way out,” but that is far from true. The original lotus seed moon cake is still best selling, with the addition of healthier versions making way and reeling in consumers. Embedded into the mid-autumn celebration, moon cakes will always have a place.
