Third Description of English-Chinese Text Retrieval Interface
For the third iteration, the group would like to
explore ways of using the interface to clarify two "muddy" concepts to
users.
- First, we feel as though a second search button should be added so
that the user can be the catalyst for the dispatch of the disambiguated
search string to the search engine. Currently, each time the user
highlights a meaning line in the PolysemTrans box, a new search is sent to
the search engine and new results are displayed. This wastes time on
searches that the user might not be ready to perform yet.
- By extension, the addition of a second search button will necessitate
the rewording of on-screen instructions. The new on-screen labels will
need to make clear to the user the difference between the first search
(sending terms to the dictionary) and the second search (sending
translated/disambiguated terms to the document search engine). This might
be done by using color and/or space to separate the "stages" of a search.
- Second, we plan to change the wording of the PolysemTrans box label to
clarify the purpose of the box and what action the user should take.
Additionally, the third iteration will activate the retrieval of document
summaries when a search is initiated.
