Comparison of Rate-based and Credit-based schemes

Rate Based Control
- Has a higher response time to bursts of data
- Cannot easily handle loss of RM cells
- Good for network backbones
- Cheaper to implement- hardware does most of the bookkeeping

Credit Based Control
- Quick response to bursty data
- Loss of credit control cells does not create problem, the previous value of credit is used
- Good for implementation on an incremental basis
