Edgar Allen Poe

(1809 - 1849)


Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Both of his parents were professional actors who died before he was three. He was brought up by a foster parent, a tobacco exporter in Richmond, Virginia. Much of his work was themed around horror, death, and science. Poe’s work as an editor, a poet, and a critic had a profound impact on American and international literature. He also wrote many short stories. Poe is one of the first American poets to have a large impact on the international literary scene.
