19th Century American Poetry

A Learning Guide

Emily Dickinson

(1830 - 1886)

Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts and was known for being reclusive throughout her life. She rarely left her home or had visitors. However, those that she did come in contact with had a large impact on her poetry. Much of her poetry reflects concepts of loneliness and desire, while some of her other poetry is more inspirational and celebratory in nature.
