About Me

My name is Jessica Marie Johnson and I am a Ph.D. student in the Department of History at the University of Maryland-College Park. I earned my B.A. in African & African American Studies from Washington University in St. Louis in 2004.

You are encouraged to explore this site. Continue reading for more on my research, teaching and professional interests. See the links to the left for more on my experiences as a graduate student, teaching exercises and my experiments using technology to research and teach history. "Borrowing" material is welcome, just cite accordingly. I appreciate comments and feedback.

Research

My field of study is Atlantic world and African diaspora. My areas of concentration are American history, African-American history, Afro-Latina/o history, Afro-Caribbean history, slavery in the United States and the Caribbean, urban histories of slavery and diaspora, and women of the African diaspora

Teaching

My teaching interests parallel my research interests. In addition, I explore using technology to facilitate discussion and critique, to explore primary surces, and to challenge students' perceptions of history as past and therefore irrelevant. I have utilized listservs, message boards, online course spaces (powered by ELMS), websites and webpages, digital archives and exhibits, wikis and blogs.
