Ingi's Three Semester Review
|
Being an Earth Life & Time Scholar helped me understand the physical world and its living components through field trips, out of class assignments, and readings. Along with the class exercises and readings I have also learned about the physical world and its living components through other CPSP required classes.
The field trip that helped me a lot was the trip to the natural history museum during my second semester as an ELT Scholar. In that field trip I was able to see all aspects of natural history throughout time. For example I was able to witness the different species present in different eras and how they biologically changed due to their environment as time passed. I loved this field trip so much because I learned a lot due to the visuals and clarity of the displays.
Another field trip that I liked was the field trip to the Koshland Science museum that I went to during the third semester of being an ELT Scholar. At this museum I was able to see the effects of humans on the environment over the past years. One of the exhibits that was particularly impressive was the simple exhibit of three different pictures of the same mountain in a timeline type fashion showing the diminishing snow at the type of the mountain over time.
The out of class assignment that I learned a lot from was the assignment of my family genealogy. This assignment helped me understand that with time regardless of where my immediate family is now; my ancestors came from all over the world. This helped me understand that no one is purely from one country. The idea of migration of people and the consequences of these immigrations from place to place was clarified to me by this exercise.
The readings such as Carl Sagan’s Guns Germs and Steel was the third thing from ELT class that taught me a lot. This book helped me understand the consequences of weapons, germs, and the environment on the development of certain nations. Previously I had many assumptions about how and why certain nations developed the way they did but this book clarified all of the myths that I had heard. I liked this book a lot because of the way it was written and how clear it was with descriptions and examples. Other books that we read regarding evolution were also extremely helpful because I learned about how evolution happened in the history of our time.
The two class requirements that I took for this class were biology, and Chemistry. Both classes have helped me understand how science has evolved over time. In both classes the history of how scientists discovered laws and phenomenons were discovered. With each new discovery and experiment one could see how time influenced each discovery.
If I was not an ELT Scholar I probably would not have gone to these field trips and read these books. These field trips and books have given me a different perspective on the history of science through time as I was used to just learning about the history through typical science classes such as biology and chemistry. I liked learning the history of science through time in these different perspectives because it gave me many examples of how science has changed not just a one dimensional explanation.
In general my three semesters as an ELT Scholar have proven to be very educational and interesting. I have learned about so many diverse ideas and perspectives on a topic that many people take for granted or don’t pay much attention to and I feel very privileged to have been given the opportunity to learn all of this information. ELT Scholars has been a very good experience and if given the chance I would do it again.
