Vanessa Hill Email address: vanes384@umd.edu Affiliation (Scholars Program: Earth, Life, and Time, Major: Kinesiology) Title of Project: Looking through the Eyes of a Physical Therapist Description of Project: The student went around observing how physical therapists practice. The work that was done included wrapping ankles and ultrasounds. She also serviced patients if they were uncomfortable in any way. What were the main benefits you received from doing the project?: The student said the biggest benefit of this experience was learning how physical therapists treat their patients. She also learned how certain procedures are done, and how certain pain is alleviated. What were the main pitfalls or obstacles during the development and/or undertaking of the project?: The student said there were a lot of hours. Also all of the small work was done by her, and didn’t experience the full potential of hands on work.

Spencer Schecht Email address: sschecht@umd.edu Affiliation (Scholars Program: Earth, Life, and Time, Major: Biology) Title of Project: The Cycad Apical Meristem Description of Project: The student dissected a cycad down to its meristem and used electron microscopy to analyze it. He also fixed samples of the plant in order to analyze it. The student used high level equipment in order to accomplish this task. What were the main benefits you received from doing the project?: The student stated that it was great experience to do so much hands on experience. Also he was taught how to use an electron microscope which was a new thing to him. What were the main pitfalls or obstacles during the development and/or undertaking of the project?: The number one obstacle was prepping. It takes a long time to prep the setup. Also the clarity of the picture did not always come out great so it was very inconsistent. The student had to repeat the procedure many times in order to achieve a good picture.

Paul David Ims Email address: dims@umd.edu Affiliation: (Scholars program: Earth, Life, and Time, Major: Physiology and Neurobiology) Title of Project: Inside the Emergency Room and Operating Room Description of Project: The reason for this project was to learn. The student talked to doctors and learned from and shadowed them as they operated. The student also transported charts, shadowed nurses, and made sure that every patient was comfortable. What were the main benefits you received from doing this project?: From doing this project the student learned greatly and found out whether or not medicine was the right field of work for him or not. Also he was able to see some operations done which included gallbladder removal and arthroscopic surgery. What were the main pitfalls or obstacles during the development and/or undertaking of the project?: The student was not able to shadow the doctors in the emergency room due to a change in the administration. Also because the student did not have enough schooling, he could not get involved as much as would have liked.
