Sumary: The article starts off explaining what growth hormones and Insulin – like growth Factors, it explains that they make mammal's body size grow. They then claimed that these hormones also affect metabolism and lifespan. The news article then talks about two experiments, "Brain IGF-1 Receptors Control Mammalian Growth and Lifespan through a Neuroendocrine Mechanism" and “IGF Receptor in Brain and Lifespan." They vaguely explain the topic of the original articles. The reporter then goes on to conclude that low concentration of (GH) and (IGF) will go one to postpone age-related mortality.
1) The news article talks about Growth Hormones (GH) and insulin – like Growth Factors (IGF). Both of these substances are used to make mammal's body larger. The Article claims that Low concentrations of (GH) or (IGF) will postpone the aging process and age related mortality. The Scientific article supports the claims that the news article makes. The experiment states, "The mechanism appears to be an adaptive plasticity of somatotropic functions allowing individuals to decelerate growth and preserve resources, and thereby improve fitness in challenging environments. Our results also suggest that tonic somatotropic signaling entails the risk of shortened lifespan."
2) The Article included some of the information from the conclusion of the experiment, however but the explanation "Neuroendocrine Mechanism" was very vogue. The conclusion goes into a lot more detail the conclusion explains, "The mechanism appears to be an adaptive plasticity of somatotropic functions allowing individuals to decelerate growth and preserve resources, and thereby improve fitness in challenging environments." So, yes the article makes some of the same highlighted conclusions that the scientific article makes; however the article leaves you with many questions
3) The New article does not talk about any uncertainty. This is ok because the scientific article discuses the .05-degree of uncertainty (Insignificant)
4) The News Reporter connercts this expiriment to a larger issue right at the end of the article. She says, "This result is even more significant in view of the fact that growth hormones are often prescribed to elderly people, ironically, in an attempt to compensate for the effects of aging". She is trying to say that people are prescribing elderly people growth hormones to keep them living, but in reality it is killing them faster.
5) IThe Scientist conducting the experiment does talk about some past studies done on the topic of (GH). The Study was dealing with organisms other than mammals. He does not over turn this past experiment; he has merely gone in a new direction by conducting the experiment with mammals
6) . I think that this article is trying to stretch the evidence by inferring that since we are mammals all the conclusions reached in the experiment apply to us.
