Duple (and Triple) Minor Dances
In all of these dances (unless marked otherwise), the man will be
standing to the left of the woman. Men offer their right hands palm up
to the women; generally aim to have the hands be at level of the woman's
waist. For more explanation on the basic steps, see
Basic Figures. Form the sets with
couples facing across the set towards their partners.
The Duple (and Triple) Minor dances are progressive along a long set of
dancers each dancing in their own 'setlet'. Ones move down the set
while twos (or twos and threes) move up the set. Each repetition of the
dance leads to a new setlet to dance with. This differs from most of our
dances where you stay in the same set (but not necessarily the same
position) throughout the dance.

Triple Minor Longways Set
Set up with couples facing each other. Take hands-six from the head of
the hall (i.e. form setlets of 3 couples). The progression of a triple
minor is a bit different from a duple minor dance, see Progression Pattern
for a thorough description.
- A1
- Man1 casts around Man2 (who moves up), turns Woman3 2-hand turn
clockwise and falls back into Man2 position.
- A2
- Woman1 casts around Woman2 (who moves up), turns Man3 2-hand turn
clockwise and falls back into Woman2 position.
- B1
- All join hands (group of 6), 8 Slip Steps left. Keeping hands, 8 Slip
Steps right.
- B2
- Couple3 (at foot of set) keeps inside hands with Couple1 and gates
them down and around the bottom of the set. Drop hands. Couple1 then
takes Couple2 by inside hands. Couple2 gates Couple1 up and around the
top of the set.
- C1
- Couple1 and Couple3 Right-Hand Star once around. Couple1 and Couple2
Left-Hand Star once around. (no turn from the right to the left star for
couple1)
- C2
- Couple1 and Couple3 - 3 changes of a circular hey with hands. Couple1
continues out of the 3rd change to cast around the Couple2 (from a
different setlet) below them. Couple2 moves up. If there are 2 inactive
couples, the Couple1 needs to cast around both.*
The Progression Pattern
Couple2 and Couple3 alternate between being Couple2 and Couple3 as they
move up the set, Couple1 stays Couple1 down to the end and comes in as
Couple3. The top Couple2 comes in as Couple1 the next time through the
dance. If you start with full sets, there is no sitting out a time
through the dance, if you start out with a partial set at the foot, you
will NOT sit out a repetition at the head but will sit one out at the
foot.
The Progression Pattern with a full set
123 123 123 123 123 (start of dance)
213 213 213 213 213 (after first A1-A2)
231 231 231 231 231 (after 3-changes of circular hey in last A1-A2,
before cast)
232 132 132 132 131 (after the cast in last A1-A2)
123 123 123 123 123 (new couple numbers after the progression).
The Progression Pattern with a Partial Set (1 extra couple marked as x)
123 123 123 123 x (start of dance)
213 213 213 213 x (midway through dance)
231 231 231 231 x (after 3-changes of circular hey, before cast)
232 132 132 13x 1 (after final progression)
123 123 123 123 x (new numbers after the progression).
The Progression Pattern with a Partial Set (2 extra couples marked as Xx)
123 123 123 123 Xx (start of dance)
213 213 213 213 Xx (midway through dance)
231 231 231 231 Xx (after 3-changes of circular hey, before cast)
232 132 132 13X x1 (after final progression, bottom does the 3 changes)
* NOTE Couple1 drops 2 spaces at the foot.
