Down to ~60 men and women from ~100 the year before, the tournment was on verge of cancellation due to lack of pre-registration (only 24 people pre-registered, including just one pinmaster!).Why was the turnout low? Altough this was the second tournament, this was the first without the help of Doug Young and the IFPA. I heard that many of last years particpants recieved pre-registration info _after_ the pre- registration date had past! And it seemed as though they relied on word-of- mouth as their main advertising. * The last minute decision to split the open division to "A" and "B" was confusing and too late. Many of the people who would have been attracted to the tournament with such a split were of course not there. I mean spliting the tournament into three divisions is a good idea (more about that later) but it was handled kind of odd. The guys who wound up 1st & 2nd in "B" were definately not "B" players - one was my partner who I tied with for 1st place indivdual last year in our league and the other guy had played in the world IFPA pinmaster division. * 18 machines if I recall correctly, including two Stargates to go along with the advertised Shadow, Shaq Attack, Dirty Harry and Frankenstien pinballs. * I personally had a great time and was involved with lots of close matches, on both the winning and losing side. * Three divisions for a regional tournament? I like the idea. Here's one way to do it: Call it A,B, and C, just like PAPA. Force anyone who's one either won a league title, or done well (trophy or money) in any tournament to be either A or B, so that C can remain for beginners. Also make the entry fee and the payout much less for the C divison, so that the brave might be tempted to try for B. And give some incentive for good B players to try for A. This might include having the A division first, and allow B players to enter A while retaining their eligiblity to later play in A if they do poorly (let's say eliminated in 4 matches or less). This could greatly increasing the kitty for A which, for a local tournment like this, suffers from a lack of players. * Will there be a tournament next year? So far the answer is yes, but feel free to comment about improving the tournament. Besides splitting the tourney into three divisions, other ideas I had were: - Have it during the early summer. No reason to have it in March now that the world IFPA tournament is no more. - Obviously they have to be serious about mailings and getting the word out to all the operators in the midwest. - They need more added money and they need donated prizes. Why not give away a ~$500 machine as a top prize? The simple concept of winning a pinball machine will attract players. - Most of the players will be coming from the Milwaukee and Chicago areas. That have to make sure they get the word out in these two cities. - Perhaps they should align themselves with PAPA. - Did the Ohio Pinball championships the same weekend perhaps take some players away? Coordiate with Ohio tournament so the overlap doesn't happen again. * I would like to thank everyone who help put the event together. It was a lot of fun, and the main comments I heard from the players were along the lines of "this is great, I wish they had a couple of them a year". /----------------------------------------------------------\ | Michael Field ------------------- Madison Pin-Kings | |----------------------------------------------------------| | Join the Madison Area New Pin Locator Mailing List! | | Email me for mailing list, league and tourney info. | | http://www.engr.wisc.edu/~field/pinball.html | \----------------------------------------------------------/ x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x* From: Kevin Martin Subject: Re: Kenosha Pinball Tournament Results Date: 6 Mar 1995 05:56:29 GMT Organization: a2i network (MCS is somewhat on the blink right now...) field@cae.wisc.edu (Michael Brian Field) writes: >Plaques were given out for the top three in each division, except for Open >Singles Div "B" (no plaques). This tournament really was a lot of fun, even though it was small and relatively un-flashy. The games were in remarkably good shape, mostly, and there were very few breakdowns or controversies. I also liked the fact that during singles and doubles, there was very little waiting for your next game to play (except in between balls on Frankenstein, jeez). And the players who did show up were playing really well; there were many, many games over a billion points on Frankenstein, Dirty Harry, and even Shadow (I'd personally like to brag about starting Final Battle on Ball 1, during tournament play, ending up with 1773M :-). It's a shame that this tournament is now more in jeopardy than ever. The machines, by the way, were five Shadow, five Frankenstein, four Dirty Harry, two Shaq Attaq, and two Stargate (nice game, certainly better than Shaq). There was also one each of Maverick, SF2, and Judge Dredd for special events. I'm not sure who won those. Yes the plaques were very nice: on top was tournament name, in the middle was a polaroid of you holding the plaque, and on the bottom were two flippers (w/rubber). >>Pinmaster Doubles (4 teams-RR) >>----------------- >>1st - Kevin Martin & Dave Hegge >>2nd - Jason Werdrick & Rick Miller >>3rd - Noel Steere & Don Coons > >The remaining team was Dave Lindas and (I think) Dave Odya. Not Odya (that was the guy with the walkman), but a guy from Stoughton (a small town ~40 mi north of Madison) who owns about 40 games. Dave Lindas is from Madison but we can't seem to get him to join the league. I like the way he put "spin" on some of his flips! And they did allow manufacturers to play, either because they realized that the manufacturers don't have a greater advantage than anyone from Chicago or because they desperately needed entrants. /----------------------------------------------------------\ | Michael Field ------------------- Madison Pin-Kings | |----------------------------------------------------------| | Join the Madison Area New Pin Locator Mailing List! | | Email me for mailing list, league and tourney info. | | http://www.engr.wisc.edu/~field/pinball.html | \----------------------------------------------------------/ x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x* From: field@cae.wisc.edu (Michael Brian Field) Subject: Kenosha Pinball Tournament: Comments Date: 6 Mar 1995 03:10:55 GMT Organization: U of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering Here are some comments about this weekends pinball tournament in Kenosha, Wi., the results of which are in a previous post: * Turnout was a disappointment. If you thought the open split was confusing, you should have been around for the start of the mixed doubles competition. It was decided that the 8 teams would play round-robin, and would play all three games with 1 point going for each win. The winner would be determined by points. Obviously nobody thought about the concept of playing 21 4-player games in a row starting at ~7:30 pm on a Friday night. After the first round, it was decided that two-game matches would take place. The mixed doubles still didn't finish until about 2am. On top of all this, when I asked for a listing of the rules, or even a peek at theirs, the response was 'just hang around the podium when we call the event, and we'll explain everything then.'
