Farm Management Specialist (1985 - Present) Cooperative
Extension Service, University of Maryland at College Park
- Organized and conducted over 250 multi-day workshops
and seminars on economic and management issues, business planning, marketing,
enterprise budgeting, whole farm planning, record keeping, financial analysis
and computer applications for farmers, farm organizations, Extension agents,
lenders, agribusinesses and educators.
- Directed and developed the PRO-FARM Leadership and Management
program and the PRO-FARM Financial Management program which are currently
being conducted throughout Maryland.
- Conducted research & surveys, published & presented
findings on many agricultural economic topics.
- Authored over 50 factsheets, bulletins, information series,
farm management guides and journal articles on farm management issues and
problems.
- Counseled numerous individual farmers on farm management
problems.
- Established the FINPACK farm financial analysis program
in Maryland through cooperation with the Center for Farm Financial Management,
University of Minnesota.
- Advised Maryland Department of Agriculture and Maryland
legislature on agricultural land valuation methods associated with farm
land preservation.
International Consultant and Educator
- Moldova (April-May, 1997) Teamed up with two dairy specialists
to develop technical and financial recommendations for three former socialist
dairies to improve their ability to provide quantity and quality milk to
a renovated milk processing plant.
- Kazakstan (September-October, 1996) Conducted a workshop
on computer use in business planning for faculty of the Talgar Agriculural
College.
- Kazakhstan (April-May, 1996) Conducted a workshop on
business planning, financial analysis, and computer use for faculty members
of the Talgar Agricultural College at Talgar, Kazakhstan. Assisted the
college administration in developing a three year business plan for the
college's 6,000 acre research farm.
- Poland (May, 1994) Conducted a workshop on business planning,
record-keeping, financial analysis, and computer use for faculty members
of the Piaseczno Agricultural College at Piaseczno, Poland.
- Poland (1992) Polish/American Extension Project, United
States Department of Agriculture (Spent 1 year in Poland on leave of absence
from the University of Maryland) Counseled the Polish Agricultural Advisory
Service in their objective to improve the efficiency of the agricultural
sector under the developing market oriented economy. Served on a regional
State Farm Privatization Task Force to monitor and advise on problems related
to the privatization of the Polish socialist state farms and agribusinesses.
Trained state farm managers, private farmers, agricultural advisors, agribusiness
managers, educators and others in "free market" business management
principles. Organized and conducted workshops on business planning, financial
analysis, enterprise analysis, marketing and other management topics. Organized
and conducted intensive hands-on training in using computers to do economic
analysis such as enterprise analysis, partial budgeting, cash flow analysis,
machinery cost analysis, loan calculations and data base management. Developed
training materials for workshops, published articles on agricultural economic
topics.
- Conducted business planning workshops and agricultural
tours in the United States for agribusiness men and educators from Albania,
Denmark, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Russia, Belorussia, and Ukraine.
Teaching and Research Assistant (1984 - 1985) Department
of Agricultural Economics, Cornell University
- Assisted in teaching farm management.
- Programmed computer spreadsheet templates for farm management
applications, taught workshops on computer use in agriculture, formulated
educational software for computers under an IBM grant.
- Researched the economic effects of field operation management
on New York dairy farms.
Self-employed Farmer Shelley, Idaho, worked on family
farm until 1983
- Produced potatoes, small grains and hay. Involved with
purchasing, budgeting, book-keeping, financing, and marketing.
- Directed work crews of up to 15 employees.
- Managed field operations, operated most types of heavy
farm equipment, managed flood and sprinkler irrigation systems (hand lines,
wheel lines and center pivots).
- Worked with many types of fertilizers and pesticides,
passed Idaho Department of Agriculture Chemical Consultant exams in aquatics,
seed treatment, law & safety, herbicides, and insecticides.
- Maintained and repaired equipment (proficient arc welder),
constructed specialized equipment, helped construct various types of buildings,
helped in development of desert tract into farmable acreage.
