My parents, on the Train Ride to Nowhere (my father's 80th birthday celebration).
What follow are photos by my father (CC Delwiche) on his trips to the arctic. There were apparently at least three trips in 1960, 1961, and 1962, to Point Barrow and elsewhere. He is the only person I have known personally who had traveled by dogsled not for entertainment, but because it was the available means of transportation. Can you imagine the converstation with the travel agent?

These are from Mount Saint Helens shortly after the eruption in 1980, when CCD flew in to collect samples. Most seem to be from 26 July, 1980, but at least one shot of the crater is dated 2 July 1980. The 1980 eruption was on May 18, and he tried to go into to sample as soon as it was safe to do so. This was long enough after the eruption that the helicopter was allowed to land, but soon enough afterwards that it had to wait to take them out if the mountain started to rumble again. I remember him joking about being followed around by the helicopter pilot, who was apparently quite curious about what they were doing. I think that these photos were taken by CCD, but the copies I have are duplicates, and they might have been taken by a colleague. Each photo is a link to a full-sized image, but be warned, these are big images (2000 pixels wide), so you will need patience or a fast connection to view them.

I think I actually remember this trip, but I was only two years old, so I don't remember much.
