Garter Stitch Baby Cardigan

Size: 6, 9, 12 months Materials: Three 50 g balls DK wool blend yarn, (or 4-ply worsted
wool blend, synthetic, or DK cotton)
Gauge: 4 to 5 stitches per inch. Optional Slip-stitch border:
Directions: Sweater is worked in one piece. Using #5 needles, cast on 50 (56:62) stitches. Work 5 rows in garter stitch, every row knit (or follow 8 row slip-stitch pattern). Change to #6 needles and continue in garter stitch until work measures 6”(6 ½: 7). Shape Sleeves: Cast on 19 (21:23) stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. 88 sts.(98:108). Continue in garter stitch until work measures 10 ½” (11: 11 ½). Work Right Front and Sleeve: Knit 32 (36:40) stitches, turn and leave remaining stitches (56, etc.) on a stitch holder. *Working on 32 (36:40) stitches, knit 6 (6:8) rows straight, increase at neck edge on next and every alternate row until there are 43 (47:51) stitches on needle. Continue straight until sleeve measures 9”(9 ½: 10”). With RS facing, bind off 19 (21:23) stitches for the sleeve. Knit even on remaining 24 sts for the front until it corresponds in length to back. Change to #5 needles, knit 5 rows for hem, or follow 8-row slip-stitch pattern border. Cast off. Work Left Front and Sleeve: Place 26 (28:30) stitches on stitch holder for back neck. Rejoin the yarn to the remaining 32 (36:40) stitches at neck edge, and knit to the end of the row. Work from * to match the first side. Sleeve Bands: With right side of work facing, using #5 needles, pick up 38 (42:46) stitches along the sleeve edge. Knit 1 row. Next row, K2, K2 together across, end K2. Work 4 (6) more rows in garter and cast off. Front Band: Using #5 needles and with right side of work facing, pick up 31 (35: 39) stitches up right front 15(16:19) stitches up right neck, 26 (28:30) stitches from stitch holder, 15 (16:19) down left neck and 31 (35:39) stitches down left front. 118 (130:146) stitches. To Make Buttonholes: Knit to last 33 (37:41) stitches *YO, knit 2 stitches together, knit 5(6:7) stitches, repeat from * three more times, YO, knit 2 stitches together, knit to the end. Knit 1 row, then cast off. To Make Up: Weave in all ends. Lay work out flat and gently steam. With the right sides of the knitting facing, sew up the sleeve and side seams using simple overstitch. Work single crochet around bottom (waist) edge of sweater. Sew on the buttons. Hat: See "Ear Flap Baby Hat" pattern.
