· MIPS Grant ($617,672): */Columbia-based PCTEST Engineering Laboratory, Inc. (www.pctestlab.com <http://www.pctestlab.com/>) and Byeng Youn, assistant professor, University of Maryland, College Park ($308,846)/*: developing a Smart Thermal Management (STM) platform to improve the safety and reliability of lithium batteries used in portable wireless devices, handsets, laptop computers, power tools, and automotive hybrid electric vehicles.

· Professor Youn got Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Faculty Development Grant, 2009

· The paper titled "Optimal Design of Constrained-Layer Damping Structure Considering Variability in Material and Operational Condition" accepted by the AIAA Journal (Impact factor=1.025, 2008)

· Dr. Lee's second baby was born.

· Pingfeng passed proposal defense (April. 30.2009, Title: A Paradigm Shit of System Design: Resilience-based System Design).

· Mr. Matthieu Giraud (ENSI BOURGES, FRANCE) joined for internship program from 06/08/09. His research topic is the design innovation of piezoelectric energy harvesting skin.

· Lulu takes GM internship (May-August, General Motors Technical Center, Warren, MI).

· Zhimin and Byungchang passed qualifying exam. (April. 03. 09).

· Journal article, “A Hierarchical Model Validation of Predictive Models for Engineering Product Design,” was nominated as the Best Paper at ASME IDETC this year. We have about 200 papers and only five of them are nominated this year.

· LG Electronics Grant ($40,000) awarded, starting from March 2009. It is titled as Reliability-Based Design for tolerance allocation in two-door refrigerator.

· Prof. Lee, Dooho went back to Korea after his sabbatical leave.

· Prof. Youn, Ping and Zhimin’s ASME best paper is recognized as the 2008 significant accomplishment in the Clark School of Engineering. You can find the news at http://www.eng.umd.edu/aboutus/accomplish/0109-faculty.html

· Ping won a future faculty fellowship in January.

· Lulu was informed of her summer intern at GM R&D Center in Summer.

 

  2008

 

· Journal article, “Complementary Interaction Method (CIM) for System Reliability Assessment,” was accepted on Journal of Mechanical Design.

· LG Electronics project in 2008 was complete.

· Prof. Youn gave an invited talk (December 9) at NIST National Institute for Standards and Technology) titled "Sustainable energy harvesting for building automation".  Dr. Lee, Soobum also attended the talk.

· Two patent applications were filed as follows:

· Ping and Lulu passed their qualifying exam.
