Title of Project: Volunteering in the Operation Room of Shock Trauma at the University of Maryland Medical Center

Decscription of Project: Megan’s goals going into the internship were to learn more about what goes on in shock trauma as well as gain clinical experience. There were a number of different aspects to her project, as the Medical Center assigned her a variety of duties. Among these jobs included running blood samples, cleaning the middles (rooms between the OR and lobby(?) and operation rooms, and restocking the sinks with supplies.

What were the main benefits you received from doing the project?: Looking back at the experience, Megan noted a number of different benefits of the job. She learned a lot about the medical school process and was able to observe surgeries.

What were the main pitfalls or obstacles during the development and/or undertaking of the project?: The one minor pitfall of the project was that Megan said she often felt “In the way” of and “useless” to those people who worked in the Trauma Center.

Title of Project: Fibonacci Numbers of Ray Floret Count and Cycad Shoot Apical Meristems

Decscription of Project: This project was broken down into two parts, the first one being comprised of Evan observing the number of petals on certain types of flowers and noticing if they were consistent with the famous Fibonacci Sequence. The second goal of the project was for Evan to locate the shoot (area where new leaves stem out) of Cycad plants and remove the Apical Meristem for observation.

What were the main benefits you received from doing the project?: The main benefit of this investigating project was the research experience.

What were the main pitfalls or obstacles during the development and/or undertaking of the project?: The main obstacle of the project was locating and removing the Apical Meristem, which is very small.

Title of Project: St. Joseph’s Medical Center: Emgerency Departments Nurse Assistant

Decscription of Project: As a volunteer in the Emergency Department, she shadowed doctors and nurses as well as helped with patients and surgeries.

What were the main benefits you received from doing the project?: The benefits of the internship were that it is important to interact with people as a biology major and she is thinking about becoming a doctor.

What were the main pitfalls or obstacles during the development and/or undertaking of the project?: The only downfalls were that the patients weren’t very cooperative and she had to be patient with them.
