Our Northeast Camping Trip

Day 1: The Journey to North Adams

The first day of our journey was spent driving from our home to North Adams, Massachusetts, a 400-mile journey.

We left Maryland about 8:30am in the pouring rain and headed up I-95. It was not a good morning for Maryland commuters: the rain had caused several accidents around the city, including one that caused police to shut down the left side of the southbound tunnel under the city, backing up traffic for miles. Fortunately for us, our route was clear.

We were expecting to have rain the entire trip up, but the rain slowly gave way to drizzle and then to overcast skies as we headed north through Delaware and into New Jersey.

The greyhounds enjoy riding in the van, so for them the trip was merely an exercise in long-term relaxation. Wren, who normally stands up and whines sporadically during road trips (we think she's just impatient to get where we're going) took the spot on the back bench seat and watched the world go by. Tyler and Carrie made themselves comfortable on the "floor" of the van: two layers of doggie padded beds topped with a comforter.

We reached North Adams around 6pm. Our campsite was located on the edge of Wilson Lake, so it was a very picturesque site. We set up the two X-pens (portable fences, each four feet high and sixteen feet long) and then the tent, putting them all together to form a living space where the hounds could relax while we took care of other matters.

By the time we had set up the campsite, fed the hounds their dinner and ate our own dinner, night was falling. We started a fire and sat around it with the greyhounds.

However, just as we were getting ready to break out the s'more-construction materials, it began to drizzle. We decided at that point we should just pack it in for the night. We found dry places for all of our stuff (even though the drizzle did stop for a while) and then loaded everyone into the tent. I drifted off to sleep fairly quickly, but the noise being made by the campers just down the way kept Deanna up until the rain returned, much harder this time, around 11:30pm.
