Hi, This is Atul Thakur, Graduate Student at University of Maryland.

I completed my Master's Degree majoring in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. Then I joined General Electric (GE) - Aircraft Engines Tools Center of Excellence, Bangalore, India. After a yearlong wonderful association with GE I decided to pursue Graduate Studies and so I am here!

Currently, I am working in the area of context based feature simplification for physical modeling of virtual assembly. Virtual assembly is the need of manufacturing firms for virtual prototyping and to realize the philosophy of "make it right the first time". However, for the real life parts with complex geometries the performance of virtual assembly systems is crippled by the fact that many unnecessary details are present in the interacting geometries and affecting the computations adversely. The main theme of my research is to get rid of the unnecessary details related to particular application context to enhance performance and at the same time to ensure that the inaccuracies introduced by simplifications are under acceptable limits.
