Academic:
UMD offers fantastic oppurtunities to expand one's knowledge outside the classroom though various academic seminars and guest speakers. I have attended a few, one of them was a seminar on global warming sponsered by the College Park Scholar's Alumni Association on 11/06/2007 in the Grand Ballroom at Stamp Student Union. The guest speaker was Dr. Lise Van Susteren, who is one of the few people chosen by Al Gore to present their slideshow presentations on the basis of his documentary "An Inconvenient Truth." The presentation was very informative, evocative, and shed light on the urgency to solve the issue of climate change.

Recreational-Cultural:
I decided use sports events in this category because they are a huge cultural/recreational aspect of UMD college life. Before I came to College Park, i had seen very few live sports games, but now i've seen quite a few, and am loving it. I have attended nearly all the football games(missed one), 5 field hockey, 3 women's soccer, 2 men's soccer, Maryland Madness, 2 women's basketball and 1 men's basketball game. I'm a natural sports fan and UMD has made my dreams come true with the wide variety of free sporting events it offers.GO TERPS!

Diversity Horizons:
The student body of UMD is extremely diverse and several oppurtunities are to learn about different cultures, ethnic backgrounds, religions and languages. The memorial chapel has chaplains and services for many different religions. I attended the Catholic Sunday Mass 11/11/2007. It was a wonderful experience to witness a beautiful religious service even though I am not of the Catholic faith.

Citizenship:
There are a lot of student organizations and events that give UMD student's a chance to give back to the community.I attended a blood drive on 11/7/2007 and went for a meeting of a student organization named:Students and Workers Unite! on 11/6/2007 held in The Reckford Armory This organization is devoted to building an alliance with the workers on campus and making sure that the grievances of workers on campus are heard and taken of by the Administration. People give little thought to those downtrodden people who are doing important work for us which we consider menial. This organization seeks to change that and make sure they're heard.
