Moon Cake
[HOME] [BIBLIOGRAPHY] [EVOLUTION OF MOONCAKES] [RECIPES]

The Mid-Autumn Festival has been celebrated for centuries. While the Chinese created this jubilant festival to honor family unity and to worship the moon for a successful harvest, other countries like Taiwan and Vietnam have adopted this celebration into their own culture, generating the additional focus on the lives of children. Serving as a historical record, moon cakes are perhaps the best known symbol of the Mid-Autumn Festival. New flavors, forms, and meanings have been introduced as the moon cake has evolved to meet the needs and wants of new generations and changing societies. This bibliography attempts to acknowledge that history and the changes in the meaning of this festival through the evolution of moon cakes.

The sources on this bibliography have been chosen by relevance to the changes in peoples’ views of the Mid-Autumn festival, the annual creation of moon cakes, and the adaptations that have been made as the celebration has been introduced to other countries and as a result of industrialization. Besides that though, there are a few sources which discuss the history of the festival and the myths and folktales told. The majority of the sources listed are news articles and personal documentations of experience which are easily assessable through the internet. These internet sources and articles are more appropriate to addressing the purposes of this bibliography because their monthly and annual updates and publications provide a better documentation of transformations. There are few book sources because many of the books found usually focused on the history rather than changes. There are many sources unexplored though, so there is bound to be a plethora of other mediums available for use which may not be directly related to the topic of this page.
